No need.
What classes do Birch eBikes fall under?
Birch models can be categorized under two categories depending on the settings and restrictions you put on:
- Class 2: Throttle + pedal assist, max speed 20 mph.
- Class 3: Pedal assist only, max speed 28 mph.
Do I need a license or registration to ride on roads?
In most states, no license, registration, or insurance is required for Class 1 or 2 eBikes. Class 3 eBikes may have additional rules; California, for example, requires Class 3 riders to be at least 16 years old, and wear helmets at all times.
Can I ride in car traffic or bike lanes?
Yes. Birch eBikes are street legal in most areas:
- Use bike lanes or the right-hand side of traffic lanes.
- If the lane is too narrow, you may take the full lane.
- Obey all traffic signals and road rules like a standard bicycle.
Can I ride on sidewalks or shared-use trails?
This varies by class and location:
- Class 1 & 2: Often allowed on multi-use paths and some sidewalks.
- Class 3: Generally not allowed on sidewalks or unpaved trails.
Always check local signage and regulations.
Do I need to wear a helmet?
- Required for Class 3 riders in many states.
- Riders under 16 or 18 may also be required to wear helmets depending on the state.
- Birch recommends helmets for all riders, regardless of age or class.

- Paved roads and bike lanes: Permitted in most states for Class 1 and 2.
- State parks, BLM land, and US Forest Service roads: Access varies. Some areas treat eBikes like motor vehicles and may restrict access.
Backcountry trails: Check local rules—many singletrack or wilderness areas prohibit motorized access, including eBikes.
In which states are 1000W eBikes legal?
Federal law defines eBikes as ≤750W, but several states allow 1000W motors, including:
- Oregon
- Minnesota
- Kansas
- Alaska
- Tennessee
Other states may allow 1000W for off-road or OHV use but restrict them on public roads or bike paths.
Do I need insurance to ride an eBike?
No. eBike insurance is not required in most U.S. states for Class 1–3 eBikes. However:
- Some states require insurance if your bike exceeds legal speed/wattage limits.
- Riders often choose liability or theft insurance voluntarily.
How much motor power is legal for eBikes in the U.S.?
Under federal law (15 U.S. Code § 2085), a bicycle is classified as an eBike if:
- It has pedals,
- Is powered by an electric motor ≤750W (1 horsepower),
- And has a top speed ≤20 mph under motor power alone.
States can override this with stricter or looser rules—some permit up to 1000W for off-road use.

How long do I need to charge the battery?
This depends on the amount of battery consumed before charging. We recommend waiting at least 6 - 9 hours when charging a battery with under 20% charge.
Do the batteries need to be completely discharged before recharging?
No, our batteries are premium grade with protection mechanisms set in place that alleviates the need of doing so.

Birch Grolars can be cleaned like a regular bike, but be mindful of the electrical connections and potential damage they can be exposed to when in contact with water. It is also recommended to remove the battery before cleaning, while cleaning the battery separately.

Current user manuals
We currently have two user manuals; one comes with each purchase and can be found included in the packaging of the bike, the other manual, on display settings, is accessed through scanning the QR code printed on the first manual.
Code Settings
The display always shows a full battery status.
Select “Reset to defaults” in the settings menu and do a factory reset to see if the issue has been resolved. Reach out to customer service if not.
After the reset, I only see the speed and distances in kilometers. How can I switch back to mph?
Select “Toggle Unit” in the settings menu, and change “Metric” to “Imperial”.
How do I change the pedal assist level from 0 to 5?
In the "Advanced Setting” menu, under “Assist Levels”, you can configure the amount of pedal assistance you would like.
Error code 22: Throttle defect
Connect the cables of the throttle. Locate the throttle cable with the orange plug, disconnect then reconnect it to restart the throttle. If it still does not work, the choke must be replaced. Please send us relevant videos and your order number to support@birchhunters.com, we will provide you with assistance.
Error code 24: Engine reverb defect
Plug the motor cable back in. Locate the motor cable near the hub motor, unplug then plug it in again to restart the motor. If the error code is still shown on the display, send an email to us with relevant videos, the motor serial number, your order number and motor connector, and we will help replace your motor.
Errorcode 25: Bremsendefekt oder Bremse beim Start betätigt
Disconnect the brake lever cables one by one to check whether the fault is caused by the left or right brake lever. Try readjusting the bolts and see if that solves the problem. If you still see error code 25, provide us with relevant video and your order number at support@birchhunters.com, we will replace the brake levers for you.
Error code 30: Abnormal communication
You must disconnect all 7 plugs (2 brake levers, throttle, front light, rear light, sensor, motor cable). The display should then show error code 24. If code 30 is still displayed after disconnecting all plugs, there is a high probability that the problem is with the controller. If code 24 is shown on the display after disconnecting all plugs, connect the motor cable first. If 30 is displayed, the problem is with the motor. If there are no error codes after connecting the engine, connect the other connectors in sequence until code 30 is displayed. This means that code 30 is caused by that connection and this part must be replaced. You can then send us relevant videos and your order number at support@birchhunters.com.
