User Stories: How My Birch eBike Transformed My Michigan Hunt
In the rugged hills of Northern Michigan, "access" is a word we take seriously. When you’re scouting whitetail deer across 1,200-foot ridges and deep valleys, your success depends entirely on how much ground you can cover—and how much energy you have left when you get there.
I’m Dave Bachelor, and for years, these woods were my territory. But after a catastrophic ice storm tore through our region, the landscape changed. My usual trails were a graveyard of downed timber, making my usual mile-long hikes to my tree stands feel more like a survival mission than a scouting trip. That’s when I realized I didn't just need a new plan; I needed a new tool.
Why I Made the Switch
Birch is my first eBike. Like many hunters, I was a bit of a skeptic at first. Could a battery really handle Michigan’s vertical climbs? Could it stay silent enough for archery season?
The answer came during my first run through a valley. Where I used to arrive at my stand huffing, puffing, and leaving a scent trail a mile wide, I now glide in. The Birch allowed me to reclaim my territory. It hasn't just replaced my hike; it’s expanded my range. I can now access stands deep in the backcountry that were previously "too much work" for a quick morning hunt.
The Power to Climb
If you haven’t ridden in Northern Michigan, it’s hard to describe the "up-and-down." We’re talking about 1,200-foot elevation changes that can chew up and spit out a low-quality motor. I give the Birch a 5/5 for Power Performance. It doesn't just "help" you pedal; it dominates the incline.
The build quality is another 5/5. This isn't a city cruiser; it’s a tank. Whether I’m carrying my bow or my firearm, the bike feels planted and secure, even when the terrain gets greasy.
Real-World Performance
When it comes to the technical side, here is my honest take:
-
Battery (4/5): It’s "right up there." I’ve taken it on long scouting missions in cold weather, and it holds its own.
-
Buttons & Navigation (3/5): There’s a slight learning curve here. The buttons are simple in function, but it took me a few rides to master the menu navigation. Once you get it, it's intuitive, but expect to play with it for a day.
-
Setup: Straight out of the box, shipping and assembly were easy and straightforward—no mechanic's degree required.
Making It Mine: The "Michigan Mod"
Every hunter has their own way of doing things. To make the Birch my ultimate workhorse, I added a classic black milk crate to the rear rack. It’s the perfect, rugged solution for extra gear or a lunch cooler. Next on my list? A small trailer attachment. I’m already planning on using the Birch to haul my harvest out of the valleys this fall.
More Than Just a Hunting Bike
While the Birch was bought for the hunt, it’s staying for the lifestyle. I’ve already put it to work for winter camping and ice fishing. In the dead of a Michigan winter, having a reliable way to get gear across a frozen lake or through a snow-covered valley is a game-changer.
For me, the Birch isn't just an eBike. It’s the reason I’m still out there when the weather—and the terrain—says I should stay home.
