Camping With an eBike: Real Stories with the Birch Grolar

Camping with an eBike is less of a trip and more of an adventure. Add an eBike to your camping arsenal, and you can go farther, carry more, and explore everything without the limits of heavy vehicles or your own two feet. All-terrain eBikes with expansive mileage also mean going deeper off the beaten track, opening up your camping journeys to new possibilities.

In this article, we’ll recount the real-world applications of the Birch Grolar and how they help people like Kenny from Baum Outdoors and Donny from Donny Dust’s Paleo Tracks on their camping expeditions. Keep on reading to see exactly how the Grolar stands up against different terrains and environments, making all your expeditions even better.

Idaho in the Snow

Kenny’s done so many trips out in his hot tent that he’s an old hat at this. But this time, he’s got the Birch Grolar All-Wheel Drive eBike to get him through the Northern Idaho landscape and set up camp.

With his tent and stove strapped to the front rack, pannier bags and other supplies secured to the back rack, and a full pack on his shoulders, Kenny sets out through the brisk Idaho weather, zipping through heavily wooded mountain paths to find the perfect spot. Climbing the frosted hills in all-wheel drive has never been easier with the Grolar’s dual 750W motors and 160Nm of torque behind it.

Once Kenny reaches his site, it doesn’t take long to unpack the bike’s impressive load and set up camp for the night. With him and the bike safely stored inside his hot tent to escape the frigid Idaho winter nights, morning dawns on a new, snowy morning.

What’s remarkable about the Grolar isn’t just how it “climbs hills like never before,” or even its “many different locations to store stuff,” but the way it handles various terrain. When Kenny rides out, it’s with a layer of snow sticking to the ground. Luckily, the Grolar’s fat tires stay grounded, digging into the earth and committing to the climb, even on 30-degree inclines.

At the end of the trip, Kenny expresses how much fun he had with the snow, the hot tent, and the bike. With a beast like the Birch Grolar to get you in and out of those conditions, adverse weather turns into a challenge you can conquer.

Surviving in the Colorado Backcountry

Donny’s experience takes things in a totally different direction: a three-day solo survival challenge deep in the Colorado backcountry. Donny deliberately sets out with minimal gear: no matches, no knife, no standard cookware, no water filter. Just a stone tool kit, a small bark-tanned hide, some homemade cordage, camera gear, and the Birch Grolar and trailer. He even opts out of a solar charger that would keep the Grolar going for longer—wanting to “run the bike past its battery and see how long it lasted.”

Even with that constraint, the Grolar takes Donny further than he could get on foot, helping to “really speed everything up” when finding spots to make camp. In the Colorado summer, the bike’s ample mileage conserves rider energy, an essential for this three-day challenge.

Deep into Day 2, the bike still has 40% power left after 50 miles of travel, enough for the 20-mile ride back. Even when he has to stow the trailer due to a flat, the Grolar itself still holds up strong. “This’ll be a good bike for hunting this fall,” Donny remarks at the end. With an impressive first run in Colorado summer conditions, the Grolar is sure to tackle the cold season with a passion.
